Life and Adventure

Published on April 4, 2025 in General

Adventure implies an open road. Freedom. A path without a destination. It’s how life starts and potentially how life ends.

Why then does contemporary culture so regularly remove that potential? From even a very young age paths seem defined, constrained by reward or sanction.

Is this a fault of the system? Far from it, it’s the very nature of any system. Which system can flourish if the path isn’t constrained to ensure its survival? From the institutions of marriage to democracy, markets to school. Constraint preserves. It enables survival.

But what if that isn’t your quest? What if true freedom implies an entirely different path? One where the means, the end, even the journey is undefined. Open by definition.

Surely, in the absolute sense freedom is nothing but adventure.
